Reach and Teach, Community Development at Kanthallor - 4 weeks

My experience was wonderful. I got to teach, renovate a toilet and meet new and unique people. The time went by very fast and I wouldn't trade my experience for the world.

Yearoutindia staff and volunteer coordinators were all very helpful in organising/preparing for my trip. I thought the orientation I received when I arrived was very helpful, especially the pictures because it helped me to prepare for what would be expected of me. Throughout my placement Yearoutindia staff, particularly Ambadas, constantly made sure that I was ok and if I needed anything.

The accomodation arrangements during my stay were very good, it was very comfortable, safe and the natural surroundings in the area were beautiful. The only thing I missed living in Kanthallor was hot water and butter. The food was good, although spicy at times and I felt that the hygiene was very good considering the fact that we were in the middle of nowhere. The transportation was very exciting, especially in the jeep.

I do feel I was able to contribute positively tothe school at Kanthallor. When teaching I found it hard to contribute as it was difficult to know what the sisters' expected. As for the toilet project I thought it was very good and I feel I made a real difference.

My experience was wonderful. I couldn't have asked for a better time. I got to meet a lot of exciting new people who made my time at Marayoor fly by. I got to teach and interact with kids who welcome you with open arms, and the sisters who are the nicest people on earth. I got the chance to experience life from a whole different perspective which in turn makes me appreciate all that I have.

Yearoutindia is a great program and I will be back!
