"Of the 95,000 villages yet to be connected to electricity in India, 18,000 villages most likely never would, due to their remoteness" (United Nations Development Program Fact sheet)

Two volunteers from New Zealand (Jenny Baker and Clare Blackman) have taken on the Yearoutndia Solar Light Project challenge to light up the lives of 30 tribal families at the Mannan Tribal Settlement in the western Ghat Mountains of Kerala, South India. They have already been to this tribal village in the mountains of South India last year to help build sanitation facilities.

Their task now is to fund raise enough money to buy 30-40 Solar light kits to be installed by them when they travel to India in the summer of 2012. The trip has been extended to facilitate implementation a wider project involving more volunteers. All the funds raised will go directly to the project without any admin costs and they are looking for other volunteers from New Zealand to join them on this trip. Please contact them on Clare@yearoutindia.com

Jenny ran the Waipoua Forest fun run recently. The 12KM fun run is limited to 300 participants and starts 10am from Tane Mahuta. Previously Jenny also ran the Kerikeri half Marathon wearing a Saree, Paihia Family Fun run and Waipoua Forest Fun run. She will run the Paihia Fun run again this year.

Jenny is looking for other volunteers to travel with her to India in next summer. If anyone is willing to take on this challenge and join her, please contact her directly or contact any Yearoutindia coordinators on info@yearoutindia.com

Jenny also organised paper Lantern making workshops in Whangerai in June and July. These workshops were for all ages from 6yrs upwards, working in pairs or individually. The basic Lantern takes up to 2hrs to complete. All materials were supplied to make the lantern and participants were shown how to individualize their lantern. Jenny will be running many similar events in the coming months. Posters will be out in Paihia. All profit going to YOI project Funding.

Jenny is prepared to run talks for interested groups about her volunteer work and plans for installing Solar lights into a rural Tribal village in exchange for donations for YearoutIndia.

More activities are planned!
