in India, 18,000 villages most likely never would,
due to their remoteness" (United Nations Development
Program Fact sheet - 2008)
Two volunteers from New Zealand (Jenny Baker
and Clare Blackman) have taken on the Yearoutndia
Solar
Light Project challenge to light up the lives
of 30 tribal families at the Mannan Tribal Settlement
in the western Ghat Mountains of Kerala, South India.
Their task is to fund raise enough money to buy 30-40
Solar light kits to be installed by them when they
travel to India in August. All the funds raised will
go directly to the project and they are looking for
other volunteers from New Zealand to join them on

Jenny
is running the Waipoua Forest fun run on the
24th of May 2009. The 12KM fun run is limited
to 300 participants and starts 10am from Tane
Mahuta to Omapere. Jenny is planning to run
the whole marathon is a saree to help fundraise
for the Solar Light Project. Photos of this
will be posted on this page after the run. Race
completed!
Jenny is looking for other volunteers to travel
with her to India in August. If anyone is willing
to take on this challenge and join her, please
contact her directly or contact any Yearoutindia
coordinators on info@yearoutindia.com
Jenny has also organised a paper Lantern making
workshop for children at the Kawakawa Arts Centre
on Saturday 30th May 2009. Suitable for all
ages from 6yrs upwards, work in pairs or individually.
A basic Lantern should take up to 2hrs to complete.
All materials supplied to make the lantern,
participants are welcome to bring their own
tissue paper to individualize their lantern
if they wish. Cost $20 per Adult, $30 per adult
and Child. All profit going to YOI project Funding.

A second workshop will be on Monday 1st June
2009 at Waitaha Conference Centre, Copthorne
Hotel and Resort Waitangi, Paihia, Bay of Islands.
(Workshops at 10am and 12.30pm). Celebrate Matariki
(Maori New Year) and learn how to make a lantern
from Natural and man made materials.Completed!
